Cancer Biology PhD Program

The Cancer Biology Graduate Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (historically the PhD Program in Oncology) was established at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research in 1940 as the first graduate program in the United States to offer a degree in basic cancer research. The program now includes over 50 trainers from 16 different departments across the UW-Madison campus, drawing from the membership of the UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC). All Cancer Biology graduate students receive financial support including a competitive stipend, tuition remission, comprehensive benefits and an excellent cost of living in the vibrant city of Madison. Over the past 70+ years, more than 700 men and women have been trained through our program and now hold research positions in academia, industry and government throughout the United States and abroad!
