Student Profile: Maggie Stangis

Maggie Stangis; Halberg Lab

Where are you from and what’s your previous training? Why Madison and the Cancer Biology program?

I’m from Sterling Heights, MI and have both a BS and MS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I also spent some time working in an academic lab studying the bone microenvironment and prostate cancer bone metastases before coming to UW. I chose this program because of the amazing people and opportunities, and because I want to be a PI with my own cancer research lab someday!

What was your favorite place/activity to hang out when you need to de-stress?

The atrium in the WID is great for studying when you’re on main campus because of all the trees and greenery, especially during the winter! Nowadays, my favorite place to de-stress is in our home office with one of my cats.

Any new advice for incoming students?

Make your mental health a priority as you start to navigate this process! Graduate school is hard and stressful as it is. I’m always open to talk about the resources we have on campus and in the community!

What is one fun fact about you?

I have been snowboarding for over a decade, and really enjoy hanging out on the ski hills during the winter!
